Mole / Cyst / Skin Tag Removal

Mole removal, cyst removal, and skin tag removal can each improve the appearance of your skin by removing unsightly moles, cysts, or skin tags. These conditions may be troublesome for patients in a variety of ways. Moles, skin tags, or cysts can take away from your skin texture and complexion. Additionally, these growths can cause discomfort or pain over time. Certain moles that are irregular in appearance may need to be evaluated to determine if they are either cancerous or precancerous. Mole Removal

Moles form when the cells responsible for producing melanin (melanocytes) build up into clusters, forming a brown growth on the skin. This can take away from your complexion and skin texture. In some cases, moles can be an early indicator of skin cancer. As a result, many patients wish to remove moles and restore smoother-looking skin.

There are 3 main types of moles:

  • Congenital Moles: Moles you have had since you were born.
  • Acquired Moles: Moles that have appeared over time.
  • Atypical Moles: Irregular moles that are potentially cancerous.

Many moles are benign, but others may be malignant and can lead to skin cancer. All moles should be properly evaluated by a board certified dermatologist before considering mole removal.

During mole removal surgery, the growth is excised from the skin. A small amount of local anesthesia is typically used to minimize discomfort. Your dermatologist will surgically remove the mole and as little healthy tissue as possible.

Cyst Removal

Cysts are small lumps or bumps found beneath the skin that can grow in size over time. These growths can appear red and inflamed. Some cysts may cause pain, sensitivity, and discomfort for patients.

There are 2 main types of cysts:

  • Epidermoid Cysts: Cysts that form due to abnormal buildups of proteins known as keratin.
  • Sebaceous Cysts: Cysts that affect oil-producing glands (sebaceous glands).

Though many epidermoid and sebaceous cysts are non-cancerous, all cysts should still be carefully examined by a board certified dermatologist before undergoing cyst removal.

During cyst removal surgery, your doctor will typically administer a local anesthetic and either drain or completely remove the growth, while making sure to preserve as much of the surrounding tissue as possible.

Skin Tag Removal

Skin tags are small growths that consist of flaps of hanging skin attached to a small stalk of tissue. These skin growths are often bothersome for patients, as they can detract from your appearance and cause irritation. Skin tags are non-cancerous growths, but they should still be examined by a dermatologist before undergoing skin tag removal.

During skin tag removal surgery, either a topical or local anesthetic can be used. Your skin tag can be surgically removed while leaving the surrounding skin intact.
